Section 2.2 - Formal procedure for delivering pages

If a user wants to put or change information on the RGD World Wide Web server, the following procedure must be adhered to:

  1. Preparation
Contact webeditor (webeditor@rgd.nl). Some hints for a succesful preparation of the conversation:
  2. Orientation and making a plan
The webeditor and the user work out a plan, assisted by the webmaster (webmaster@rgd.nl) and webdesigner, (webdesigner@rgd.nl) who provide technical, design and other information. This information can even generate some interesting possibilies of which the user was not aware beforehand. E.g., the WWW has interactive possibilities, such as clickable maps, hyperlinking of documents, query forms and searching through indexed files.
  3. Implementation of the plan and keywords
The plan will be implemented by the webdesigner in cooperation with the user. The HTML pages will conform to the HTML standard RGD (2.3).
An important issue: keywords. The user should include keywords in the text. Consult the library, (library@rgd.nl), where a thesaurus of keywords is maintained and ask for keywords. This procedure is very analogous to the publication of an article in a scientific journal: HTML documents can be viewed as publications on a medium, that happens to be digital.
  4. Authorization
An authorization by webeditor is necessary when the pages are finished. The webdesigner must ask for an authorization. The webeditor has to verify the items Content (2.3.3.1) as mentioned in the Checklist (2.3.3).
  5. Delivery
The HTML pages will be delivered by the webdesigner or webeditor via e-mail to the webmaster.
Binary files, such as pictures ("gifs") etc., are attached with MIME to the e-mail message. Sending pages to the webmaster implies the formal authorization by webeditor.
  6. Verification and confirmation
The webmaster verifies if the pages conform to the standard, because practice shows that some items often slip through.
If the pages are okayed the pages are put on the WWW server by the webmaster and a confirmation is sent by e-mail to the webdesigner or webeditor. If the pages do not pass the checklist, they will be sent back by e-mail with appropiate comments.
The webdesigner informs webeditor and the user if the pages are present on the server.
The user is not allowed to register pages in any way on so called index and catalogus servers (such as Lycos and Yahoo): see the procedure in Registration of the RGD WWW server (3.5).

There are three kinds of homepage which you can request via a form, thus skipping the above mentioned procedure (Dutch, only available internally):

  1. Program homepage
  2. Project homepage
  3. Personal homepage
