Section 3.5 - Registration of the RGD WWW server

Top of this screen document.

1 Introduction, procedures and robots

Only the webmaster is allowed to register our server or pages at the various index and catalogus servers. This is done on the one hand to keep an overview and prevent duplications and the other to ensure that the registration is carried uniformly and correct.

Naturally you can notify the webmaster of an index or catalogue server where we have not been registered with our home page, or where you, e.g. as a program manager, want to see your program home registered. In such a case you should check in the overview given below, if we are not already registered there or are about to be.
If not, send an e-mail to the webmaster with the feedback form.
Specify at the Subject an appropiate term, such as Registration Home Page or Registration Program Home Page, and put the URL in the Message if it is about a Program Home Page.

Gareth Rees has written a guide on how to publish on the Web, the Guide to publishing on the World Wide Web.

The RGD WWW server (http://www.rgd.nl) has been announced from October 1996, when it had been reasobly filled. Before that, web robots were kept off this site by the file robots.txt in the WWW "document root" containing:

# URL: http://www.rgd.nl/robots.txt
# At our site no robots (*) are allowed to access anything (disallow /).
# The latest specs for the contents of a robots.txt file can be found at:
# http://info.webcrawler.com/mak/projects/robots/robots.html
User-agent: *
Disallow: /

The RGD FTP server (ftp.rgd.nl) will be registered at the Monster FTP Sites List by the webmaster, if files are put on it.

2 Registration text and keywords

The RGD WWW server is registered with the following descriptive texts and keywords by the webmaster. When registering the respective catalogue or index maintainer will be notified of sites where our server has already been registered, because some server exchange information amongst themselves.
Note: See TNO-NITG.

Summary (short)
RijkZ Groen Dienst (RGD): centre for information and research on the geology of the Netherlands.
Summary (extended)
RijkZ Groen Dienst (RGD): centre for information and research on the geology of the Netherlands.
Our subsoil is important in more than one aspect: as well for use of the surface as for the possible mining of deeper mineral and energy resources. Sound management of the subsoil of the Netherlands must be based upon extended knowledge. The RGD is the primary organization that carries this knowledge of the subsoil of the Netherlands and is therefore the advisor for governmental bodies, companies and private persons about the dutch subsoil and the dutch part of the North Sea bottom.
Keywords (ordered by importance)
  1. Geology
  2. Oil and gas
  3. Mineral resources
  4. Mapping
  5. Hydrogeology
  6. Environment
  7. Geochemistry
  8. Geological database
  9. Geotechnology
  10. Geological maps
  11. Public information

3 Sites where the RGD WWW server has been registered

Search the RGD Searches on the RGD web server itself can be carried via the RGD search page!
The search engine of the RGD is implemented with the NexTrieve software from Nexial.
For freeware tools, see e.g. EIT, Harvest and Glimpse.

The registration of the RGD WWW server was done from October 22, 1996, when the server had reached a level of stability and was reasonably "filled".

The RGD WWW server has been registered at:

Dutch catalogues.
Naturally, we must be present on the various Dutch catalogues and sites:
NL-menu
The NL-menu of SURFnet/InfoServices only includes sites that register themselves.
Dutch Home Page
The Dutch Home Page has a clickable map of the Netherlands.
Ilse
On Ilse one can register oneself.
NL-URL
On NOIS one can also register oneself.
De Internet Gids
De Internet Gids (Yellow Pages) is very extensive and popular.
Search.NL
Belongs to the site mentioned next and offers fuzzy search facilities, implemented with the same software (NexTrieve) the RGD uses.
Holland Exxpo
Holland Exxpo has been setup for companies and normally charge money for a reference to ones own WWW site. We have been included freely.
The Ministry of Economic Affairs
Feedback can be given with this form. On a number of pages (e.g. the organigram), hyperlinks to our WWW server should be included.
Ministry of the Interior (BiZa)
BiZa keeps an overview of connected governmental organizations. Register via redactie@minbiza.nl. BiZa should register itself at the European Union, at the overview page of national governmental servers.
Computable
Computable is a well known computer business magazine for the Benelux (in dutch). The Benelux comprises the Netherlands, Belgium and Luxemburg. Feedback can be sent to the editors at redcompu@col.vnu.com. Computable regularly announces new WWW sites of the Benelux.

OpenText
New and fast. With the commercially available indexing software one can index document trees of your own server, with the speciality that the WordPerfect format is also supported. Deserves further study.
World Wide Web Worm
An oldie, still often used.
ALIWEB
On this site there is a lot of info about Web robots and how to protect your WWW server against them.
Geo links
Super page for geo links, register at jacobson@geoserv.isgs.uiuc.edu.
WWW Virtual Library
Also hierarchical. Used to be on CERN, but now serviced by the W3 organization.
US Geological Survey
The USGS has been notified, as promised.
comp.infosystems.www.announce.
This is the Usenet news group for e.g. announcements of new WWW servers. Read the charter with guidelines for posting announcements.
sci.geo.geology
This is the Usenet news group for geology.
Also announced on these news groups:
Information Market Europe
A list of government servers by country maintained by I*M Europe for the European Community.

4 Sites where the RGD WWW server has to be registered

Search the RGD Searches on the RGD web server itself can be carried via the RGD search page!
The search engine of the RGD is implemented with the NexTrieve software from Nexial.
For freeware tools, see e.g. EIT, Harvest and Glimpse.

A handy tool for registration is e.g. Submit It!. You fill in a form and the home url will be registered at Yahoo, Lycos etc. Furthermore, Internet World (p. 68, april 1996) has an overview article on this matter.

The RGD WWW server will soon be registered at:

Dutch catalogues.
Naturally, we must be present on the various dutch catalogues and sites:
Netherlands Energy Research Foundation ECN
The ECN has a `Energy Information on Internet' (EII) database that comprises 227 energy-related information sources that can be accessed through Internet. When our Geo-energy page is finished, we can also register here.

5 Short URL's

Short URL's are realized with Unix symbolic links. They are meant for usage in publications etc. where it is convenient to have short, descriptive and therefore easy to remember url's. The document tree tends to go "deep" on the server, e.g. for projects.
In addition, the url's are extra short, because only the directory is mentioned in the url, that therefore does need to end with a slash, "/". When opening such a url the server returns by default a page welcome.html.

List of short URL's.
Note: the last slash (.../) is very important!

Short URL ---> Real or actual URL

http://www.rgd.nl/Welcome.html  --->  http://www.rgd.nl/welcome.html
