Section 1.3 - Tasks of the webmaster
The webmaster is the maintainer and administrator of a World Wide Web
(WWW) server.
The tasks of the RGD webmaster are:
- Maintaining the documents on the WWW server.
- Verification of the documents (HTML syntax, hyperlinks, keywords etc.),
according to the guidelines, described in the next chapter.
- Issuing guidelines for delivering information on the WWW server.
- Liaison to the responsible persons of feedback and comments on pages.
- Writing and administrating so called CGI scripts as used by e.g.
<FORM>
's (amongst which e-mail forms) and the
search facilities (keyword, e-mail addresses and phonebook).
- Keeping track of the various logs, such as the usage
statistics (who visited the server and when).
- Registration of the WWW server at the various catalogus and index
servers on the Internet, so that others can find the
RGD easily and uniformly.
- Keeping track of literature on the WWW and monitoring the developments
on Internet, in order to be able to give adequate advice about how to
keep our WWW server up-to-date regarding technique and content.
Participation in the
CWIS-NL
user group of SURFnet and investigating and using software tools to
automate the tasks mentioned above.
The tasks of the webmaster are therefore relatively independent
from regular system administration of the machine on which the WWW server
is running, such as security, software installation, backup's etc.
