to the kind cooperation of the publisher,

I wrote a book
about Linux!
It is written in Dutch and is aimed towards the experienced Dos user who
has heard about Unix and wants to try it out and the Unix user who works
at the office behind a Unix workstation and wants to have a cheap Unix at
home using her or his i386 or higher PC.
Our book has been released under the GPL (GNU General Public License) on
1999-11-12, thanks to the kind cooperation of the publisher,
ten Hagen & Stam!

The book costed Dfl. 39,50 (about $20 or 20 euro nowadays). One dollar of every sold book was donated to the Free Software Foundation (FSF). Linux falls under the FSF's "Gnu Copyleft" and the authors fully subscribe to the ideology of the FSF.
The book sold over 250 copies december 1994 - march 1995, and 600 in august! Furthermore Hans and I made it into Scheltema's book top 10 in march:

Wat is Linux?
Linux is een volwaardige implementatie van Unix voor de PC's met een
386 processor of hoger. Het is een robuust en echt multi-tasking operating
systeem is, met ingebouwde netwerk ondersteuning. Dit laatste maakt het
mogelijk om zo het Internet, de "electronische snelweg", op te rijden!
Linux is, inclusief veel systeem- en applicatie software, kosteloos
verkrijgbaar.
Voor wie is het interessant?
Dit boek, voorzover bekend het eerste in de nederlandse taal, biedt hulp
bij de installatie en het gebruik van Linux voor mensen die geen of weinig
ervaring hebben met het UNIX operating systeem.
Tevens wordt de aansluiting op Internet uitvoerig behandeld.
Het boek is interessant voor:
* de Dos gebruiker die op zijn of haar PC Unix wil kunnen uitproberen,
terwijl hetzelfde apparaat ook voor MS-DOS en MS-Windows volledig
inzetbaar blijft
* Mensen die op hun werk professionele workstations gebruiken en thuis
dezelfde mogelijkheden willen hebben en dezelfde software willen
gebruiken
* bedrijven en instellingen, die Linux in willen zetten als goedkoop
Unix workstation, X terminal, NFS file server, World Wide Web server
of zelfs "Firewall gateway"
Het boek is geschreven vanuit de optiek van een Dos gebruiker die op
een zachtzinnige (en kosteloze) manier in aanraking wil komen met de
mogelijkheden van het Unix besturingssysteem.

Het bijzondere kenmerk van Linux is dat het tot stand gekomen is
dankzij de inspanningen van vele enthousiastelingen op het Internet
onder wie niet in de laatste plaats Linus Thorvalds, de ontwikkelaar
van de kernel (excuses voor de typo op de achterflap, waar ten onrechte
Linux Thorvalds staat... :-( En dat is bepaald niet de enige plaats
waar de lay-out jongens de boel hebben verziekt :-((. paai).
Linux valt onder de zgn. "Gnu Public License" (GPL) van de
"Free Software Foundation" (FSF), waarvan een kopie in het boek is
opgenomen.
Dit komt er in de praktijk op neer dat de software kosteloos te
verkrijgen en gebruiken is. Het is in een aantal opzichten te
vergelijken met public domain en shareware software. Beide auteurs
onderschrijven de doelstellingen van de FSF volledig, reden waarom
er $1 van elk verkocht exemplaar van dit boek naar de FSF gaat.
Dit concept en daarnaast het feit dat de GNU software een compleet
scala van systeem-software en applicaties biedt, betekent dat de
drempel om eindelijk eens met Unix te kunnen werken voor particuliere
Dos gebruikers sterk verlaagd wordt.
Kortom: Linux is een zeer krachtig en goedkoop vehikel zowel om
Unix-programma's te draaien als om eens rond te gaan toeren op de
Information Highway!
Tienduizenden enthousiaste Linux gebruikers over de hele wereld kunnen
hier reeds van getuigen.
Over de auteurs
Hans Paijmans is als docent en onderzoeker verbonden aan de
Faculteit der Letteren van de Katholieke Universiteit van Brabant
waar hij onder andere onderzoek doet op het gebied van Kunstmatige
Intelligentie en Information Retrieval: het automatisch analyseren,
opbergen en weer terugvinden van teksten. Hij is bereikbaar via

Eric Maryniak was als medewerker onderwijs en onderzoek verbonden aan
de Technische Universiteit te Delft, waar hij zes jaar geleden voor het
eerst in contact kwam met het Internet en sinds vorig jaar met Linux.

De auteurs hebben naast veelvuldig Internet gebruik, zowel voor hun
werkt als prive, een passie voor motorrijden gemeen.
Ze hebben elkaar leren kennen op een door de KUB georganiseerde dag
over OS/2, waar een van de auteurs (EM) in een loting zelfs een
gratis OS/2 pakket won waar hij overigens iemand anders blij mee
heeft gemaakt, daar hij zelf eigenlijk meer een Linux gebruiker is...

The The Linux Documentation Project, started by Matt Welsh and hosted on then well known https://www.ibiblio.org/ (formerly metalab.unc.edu and before that sunsite.unc.edu), had all Linux things of crucial importance such as sound recordings of Linus pronouning "Linux" in English and Swedish and pictures of him after a night of kernel hacking. (It would be interesting to have the sound recordings in the latter case as well).
Of no importance at all is me pronouncing "Linux" in Dutch.
There are a lot of places with good lists of (lists of ...) pointers to Linux sites. So I'll just mention:
